My home is my castle!
In the Euroregio Meuse-Rhine there are numerous castles and mansions. Impossible to visit them all! And every site has its own marvelous story. We have chosen three sites near Maastricht that can tell the rich history of this region. In Lanaken Pietersheim we will visit a 12th century castle in a beautiful landscape and with an exceptional story. A small museum shows the results of archaeological excavations and historical events.
The ruins of the once so imposing castle of Valkenburg tell a rich history and is also quit a romantic site. At the top of a steep hill it overlooks the whole area since 1050. Relive the stirring history of the many sieges, destructions and dominions of knights until the final destruction in 1672.
The castle of Hoensbroek is one of the largest castles of the Netherlands and dating back to around 1360. Located in a former marshland, where three creeks flow into each other, the noblemen of the House of Hoen expanded their territory and their power. In 40 rooms you are able to get a glimpse of their luxurious life.
